Why not count words
The length of a piece of writing is determined by the number of characters, not the number of words
Many languages do not distinguish between words and characters
How the number of characters is counted
Each number, letter, symbol, space, punctuation, etc. counts as a character
Carriage returns, line feeds and other invisible characters are not counted
Emoji symbols are usually composed of multiple characters and are counted as one - as you see
How the number of paragraphs is counted
Just a line break counts as a paragraph.
Paragraphs without any visible characters are counted as blank lines.
